War. War never changes.

Even after the world has been covered in ash and rubble, even after the governments have crumbled, even after countless deaths, even after repeating the same mistake over and over again, you'd think that the world has finally learned its lesson. In the end, we're all losers in war.

The God

A Lovecraft-inspired work?
Most people believe that God is good and loving all the time, and they take comfort in this because it gives them something to smile about. But what if he isn't? He's done a lot of stuff over the years that any logical human being would consider cruel and unfair. Assuming that everything the bible says is true, the scary truth that we all have to live with is that God can literally do anything he wants, and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it. He's God that way.

Do you believe in the devil?

I don't know. In my opinion, morality is only what we make it to be. It's not really something that is. We base moral values off of the things that we as imperfect humans deem as "good" and "bad/evil". We are extremely flawed creatures, so it's normal to think that there is a being or that there are beings that are a lot more powerful than us, and that they have their own "codes" that we as their tiny powerless subjects are supposed to follow. I hope this isn't blasphemous, but thing is, if God really is perfect, then I think it wouldn't be idiotic to assume that he actually also is the devil.

Snowman House of Horror

I can relate. My mother dislikes all things that look and sound violent and "immoral".I can't even play any metal when she's around, or else she'll get a headache.

A wonderful dream

"Only in our dreams are we free. The rest of the time we need wages."

 - Terry Pratchett

There are those who say that reality is how you perceive it to be, so then why can't we perceive it to be something better? Reality can be so disappointing.

Summer vacation

Nobody likes having to do chores during summer vacation. It eats up the time that's supposed to be spent doing summer vacation stuff.

Cow milk

I mean seriously, what was that guy thinking?

And the pterodactyl flies free

I used to daydream a lot about dinosaurs, especially the spinosaurus which was my favorite. These dinosaur strips are among the best that Watterson ever drew. They're highly artistic, creative, and very intelligently made. The way he sequenced the panels in this one isn't of the usual method, he put a lot of thought into it, and it's because of this that makes this untraditional strip so good. The way he ended this one is perfect--with Calvin, as a pterodactyl, flying away safely from a near-death situation with the plesiosaurus, his teacher.
Watterson showed here that comics should be treated as art forms (and they are) and not just as a bunch of joke boxes with witty or corny one-liners at the end. This is what separates Calvin & Hobbes from just about everything else.

Nothing is ever so simple.

Aren't we all?

Mom did it.

Good Guy Calvin

I hate having to kill insects. Sure they bother you sometimes, especially cockroaches, but do they have to die for that? They've got lives too, and they're just living the way they were designed to live. There's no need to squish them for that. Just set let 'em go and set them free.

If Calivin had a brother...

I wonder what could have happened if Watterson added a new member to the family. Well, I guess we'll never know. I'm cool with that.

There's something wrong with humans

We're an interesting species. We destroy the very planet that provides us with the limited resources we need so we can advance in technology and live our lives in comfort.

The law of diminishing requests

Sometimes mom just won't allow you to do anything. I don't know why. Moms are just like that, I guess.

Ba dum tsss

We all need something like this to brighten up our lives. This definitely would make life seem more interesting.

Calvin the Invisible Man

There are times when we just wanna escape from our daily responsibilities and enjoy a cookie. With that said, wouldn't it be great to have the ability to turn invisible?

In the end, nothing ever changes.

The goal in life, I believe, is to try and find meaning in a world filled with never-changing things that are meaningless and insignificant.

Calvin the Human Insect

I wonder what it's like being an insect and having to run away from humans every time because they wanna crush you.

Calvin & Hobbes-inspired snow art! :D

If only...

Sigh...
I was almost always getting poor marks in elementary and high school, and because of that I can really relate to Calvin, who also constantly gets bad grades. I hated it, but I barely did anything about it. I think that there was only a handful of times when I actually got good marks, and I always felt like celebrating every time I did. Why not? It's not everyday that you get an A.

*

Nailed it!

The triceratops are screwed!

One of my favorite Calvin & Hobbes strips! Bill Watterson loved drawing dinosaurs, and he sure is great at it! This just goes to show how much fun one can have when doing something that they love.

The secret of succes

This could make for a great gambling strategy.

Luck

“People always call it luck when you’ve acted more sensibly than they have.”

- Anne Tyler

Life is full of difficulties. It's not easy. We all encounter problems--sometimes only once in a while, sometimes everyday--and luck has absolutely nothing to do with it. We live in a world of  cause and effect, not of luck or fortune. If you wanna improve you're "luck", you better start doing something about it.

Where do babies come from?

Weren't we all wondering about this when we were kids? My dad used to tell me that they got my twin brother and I at a buy 1 take 1 offer in a baby sale.

Amen.

“To believe a thing impossible is to make it so.”

-French Proverb

Don't ever think that you don't have what it takes to do something, because you can. Pessimism will lead you nowhere except to failure and regret. It sounds corny, but you gotta believe in yourself and just do it.

Tortellini?

Tortellini is ring-shaped pasta which is sometimes also described as "navel-shaped", hence their alternative name of "belly button".

YUKON HO!

 The Yukon Song
My tiger friend has got a sled,
And I have packed a snack.
We’re all set for the trip ahead.
We’re never coming back!
We’re abandoning this life we’ve led!
So long, Mom and Pop!
We’re sick of doing what you’ve said,
And now it’s going to stop!
We’re going where it snows all year,
Where life can have real meaning.
A place where we won’t have to hear,
“Your room could stand some cleaning.”
The Yukon is the place for us!
That’s where we want to live.
Up there we’ll get to yell and cuss,
And act real primitive.
We’ll never have to go to school,
Forced into submission,
By monstrus, crabby, teachers who’ll
Make us learn addition.
We’ll never have to clean a plate,
Of veggie glops and goos.
Messily we’ll masticate,
Using any fork we choose!
The timber wolves will be our friends.
We’ll stay up late and howl,
At the moon, till nighttime ends,
Before going on the prowl.
Oh, what a life! We cannot wait,
To be in that artic land,
Where we’ll be masters of our fate,
And lead a life that’s grand!
No more of parental rules!
We’re heading for the snow!
Good riddance to those grown up ghouls!
We’re leaving! Yukon Ho!

Unless you wanna get wet, water balloons are never a good idea.

I'm pretty sure everyone has something they can look back to and think exactly this. We've all made decisions that we regret in the end. We're human that way.

Expectation is the root of all disappointment.

Don't you just hate it when you get all excited but in the end you get really disappointed? Yeah, that's why sometimes it's better not to expect.

Everyone needs a swift kick in the butt every now and then.

"People will pay for what they want, but not for what they need."

-Bill Watterson

If you could wish for anything

“He is richest who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature.”

-Socrates

It has long been my belief that only the simplest things in life are able to make us truly happy. Have any of you guys ever tried lying down on a big sunny field? I have, and it's great.

"You've taught me nothing except how to cynically manipulate the system."

"A child educated only at school is an uneducated child."

- George Santayana

This strip pretty much sums up the current state of today's education systems. A lot of the stuff you're asked to learn in the classroom don't really prepare you for anything worthwhile. Never limit yourself only to what is being taught to you inside the confines of the school walls because the more important stuff are learned outside of the classroom. Besides, there's more to life than getting good grades.

After all, how often do we get a second chance?

Death twitches my ear. "Live", he says. "I am coming."

-Virgil

We will never truly understand life and the things we live through, and at the end of the day we always feel like we don't have enough time. Our days are numbered, and we know that, but we are oftentimes too occupied and too concerned with life's many stressful and monotonous trials that we tend to overlook the things that actually matter. Appreciate life. Sure it has got a lot of lows, but perhaps without these lows, the highs could never really be reached. As the great Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius once said, "Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them."
With that said, everything ends, but the end need not be so bad. There is as much beauty in death as there is in life, we just have to learn to see it. Death is a transition into a new phase of being. Like a dying bird waiting to stiffen and decay on the ground, death is as much a beginning as it is an end, as well as a release into the unknown beyond.

Reality continues to ruin my life.

KAZAM!

This strip pretty much sums up what being a misunderstood genius kid like Calvin is like. With the exception of his tiger Hobbes, he is friendless and alone, and so is constantly out of sync with reality, freely creating fantastical worlds in his head all day long away from the troubles and concerns of the real world. This comic strip is here to remind us of the awesome and limitless power of imagination, and how much fun one can have with it.
